This mosaic is based on an Italian
pattern given to me by an architectural historian who commissioned a
cabinet with this pattern on its doors. To make this inlay
work I had to extend the kind of parquetry techniques I use in
making symmetrical designs like my stars to a much bigger
work-piece, in this case 12 inches square. |

The framed mosaic comes alive when you
focus on it. As you see new patterns emerge and shift, it
takes on a three-dimensional aspect. |

This close-up of the mosaic's center
shows the care taken in aligning each corner of the almost 150
pieces that make up the completed pattern.
